Defense Leads Fortner's Tigers Past LSU

Auburn, Ala.--Auburn used a tight man-to-man defense and an up-tempo style of play to defeat LSU 65-53 on Sunday in an SEC women's basketball game at the Auburn Arena.

Coach Nell Fortner's Auburn Tigers improved to 4-1 in the SEC and 11-7 overall while LSU fell to 12-7 overall and 2-3 in the conference.

After starting the season 1-4, Auburn has won 10 of its last 13 games.

"We played probably the best defense we have played all year, knocked down some shots and came out with a W," said senior forward Jordan Greenleaf, who led all scorers with 12 points as she made 6-9 field goals. Greenleaf just missed a double-double as she finished the game with nine rebounds.

Auburn took control of the game early building a 32-21 halftime advantage. The Tigers stretched their lead to more than 20 points in the second half before Fortner cleared the bench and let the reserves finish the game.

Fortner said thought the team's team was "outstanding" as LSU made just 19-52 field goals. The Auburn coach said she also liked her team's intensity until the closing minutes when her subs didn't play with the effort she was looking for vs. LSU. "We just lost our focus in the second," she said. "We were 22 and I would like to have finished it out that way."

In the first half senior guard Alli Smalley moved into Auburn's all-time Top 10 for career points scored. "It's a really big honor to accomplish that knowing the great players who have played here before me and even right now," said Smalley, who scored 10 points and now has 1,419 during her Auburn career. "It's also a tribute to my teammates and our point guard and people who distribute the ball. You cannot do it without them."

Morgan Toles scored 11 points for Auburn and Blanche Alverson added nine.

LSU coach Van Chancellor said, "Auburn has a nice facility and the played like they are proud of it. Nell Fortner did a great job coaching. She was 10,000 times a better coach than I was today.

"Auburn played good," Chancellor said. "They came out with fire and played hard. They did so many good things and you have to give them credit for that. They won the game. LSU did not lose the game. Auburn came out with a lot of fire and a lot of everything. They rebounded the ball and hustled. I think this is as bad as I have been out-coached in a while."

Auburn returns to action on Thursday night at Mississippi State.
