Smalley and Strain Spark Tigers

Coach Nell Fortner's Auburn women's basketball team earned a road win at Arkansas.

Fayetteville, Ark.--Senior guard Alli Smalley scored 19 points and her freshman backup, Courtney Strain, added a collegiate high 12 points as Auburn defeated Arkansas 64-59 on Sunday.

The victory snapped a three-game losing streak for the Tigers, who improved their record to 14-11 overall and 7-5 in the SEC. Arkansas fell to 16-8 overall and 4-8 in the SEC.

The Tigers trailed by a point at halftime, but led much of the second half. They took care of the business at the free throw line to preserve their lead in a game that was close to the end.

Blanche Alverson hit a key pair of foul shots with 18.8 seconds to put the Tigers up 62-57.

Morgan Toles was fouled with 3.8 seconds remaining and iced the victory by making two foul shots after the Lady Razorbacks had cut the lead to three points with 12.6 seconds remaining.

"I am really proud of them," Auburn coach Nell Fortner said. "I thought they hung so tough for 40 minutes. Courtney Strain and Peyton Davis stepped up. Alli Smalley shot the ball so well. She hit some big shots."

Smalley made 7-11 field goals and was 3-4 on threes while adding five rebounds and three assists. Strain made 5-7 field goals and added four rebounds.

Freshman Davis, who saw much more action that normal with 21 minutes of court time, responded with six rebounds and four points.

The Tigers got nine points and four rebounds from Alverson, Toles added eight points and seven assists and Chantel Hilliard contributed eight points and seven rebounds.

Arkansas was led by 22 points and 11 rebounds from Ashley Daniels.

Auburn hit 24-64 field goals for 37.5 percent and made 5-10 threes, 11-17 free throws and finished with 40 rebounds and 13 turnovers.

Arkansas hit 22-63 shots for 34.9 percent, 2-13 threes, 13-17 free throws and finished with 43 rebounds and 16 turnovers.

Auburn returns to action with a 6 p.m. home game against on Thursday vs. an Alabama team the Tigers defeated in Tuscaloosa.
