Season Ends With WNIT Loss At Toledo

Alli Smalley

The Auburn women's basketball team lost on Saturday in the second round of the Women's National Invitational Tournament.

Toledo, Ohio--The Tigers were not able to recover from a slow start and the result was a disappointing end to a disappointing season for the Auburn women's basketball team on Saturday.

Playing at Toledo in the second round of the WNIT, Auburn lost 67-52 to the Rockets to end the season with a 16-16 record while Toledo improved to 25-8.

"They killed us, they just killed us," said Auburn coach Nell Fortner, whose team made just 31.8 percent of its field goals and was out-rebounded 44-36.

"I thought the defense was good at times, but we just couldn't get shots to go down," Fortner added.

Playing in her final college game, senior Alli Smalley scored 13 points to lead the Tigers. Freshman Tyrese Tanner added 12 points, seven rebounds and three steals for Auburn. Yolanda Richardson led the Rockets with 20 points.

Going into the tournament Fortner said she wanted to give her freshmen postseason experience and that happened. Tanner, Camille Glymph, Courtney Strain and Jassany Williams scored 32 points for the Tigers.

Smalley finished her career with 1,611 points, which is eighth in Auburn women's basketball history. "Alli has been apart of our family for so long, even back to when she was coming to our camps," said Fortner. "I am so proud of her and all that she has accomplished. I'm happy for her now that she will be moving on to bigger and better things."

Toledo jumped out to a quick 6-0 edge and stretched the margin to 29-18 by halftime. To start the second half the Rockets scored the first eight points and Auburn never rallied.

"This is a tough place to play and Toledo is a tough team, you have to give them credit, but we will take some positives from this game," Fortner said. "It was great to get into the postseason and we got some good experience for our young players."
