New Zeke Pike 7 on 7 Video
Ft. Mitchell, Ky.--Five-star quarterback Zeke Pike decided to put an early end to his recruitment on Wednesday when Scout.com’s number three ranked quarterback prospect in the country gave a verbal commitment to the Auburn Tigers, choosing Gene Chizik’s program over dozens of other colleges.
"I made my decision last weekend when I was visiting Auburn," Pike said. "I felt like God was calling me to come to Auburn."
The quarterback said when he returned home on Monday he and his father met with his coach at Dixie Heights High and told him of the decision.
When the word got out that he was announcing his college choice on Wednesday afternoon, Pike said that he received literally hundreds of phone calls from college coaches trying to convince him to put off a decision or pick their school.
Pike made it clear on Wednesday that he is very comfortable his college choice. He said that he is done with recruiting except to help Auburn put together what he hopes will be the No. 1 ranked recruiting class in the country for 2012. The Tigers' 2011 signee class was ranked No. 2 in the nation by Scout.com.
Working his list down to a final group of Auburn, Clemson, Michigan, Arkansas, Tennessee, Purdue, and North Carolina with schools such as Florida, Michigan, Alabama, USC and Georgia also offering, Pike said there was just something about Auburn that he loved.
The love for both Pike and his father Mark, who played at Georgia Tech and for the Buffalo Bills for 12 years, started just over a year ago when they made their first visit to Auburn. Going back a second time for a summer camp, Pike said everything just fell into place for him.
“We came down for a spring practice,” Pike said. “Auburn is just a great place. Since I went down there from day one it has just been a feel that I just love. It feels like family. It’s a great place.
"It’s a Godly atmosphere," he added. "I’m a Christian and it’s a blessing to be down there. I just think it’s a great place. There is something about Auburn I just love.”
As a junior Pike threw for around 2,500 yards with 27 touchdowns and added almost 1,000 yards and 17 scores on the ground.
