Bethpage, N.Y.—After a strong sophomore season Auburn junior Philip Lutzenkirchen has been named to the Watch List for the John Mackey Award given to the nation’s top tight end. He is one of 34 players on the list including four players from the SEC.
Playing in 13 games last season Lutzenkirchen caught 15 passes for 185 yards and five touchdowns. His biggest performances came late in the season with the Tigers playing for a championship. Against Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina and Oregon he caught six passes for 113 yards and three touchdowns.
As a freshman he had five receptions with two going for touchdowns and played in all 13 games. His season-long reception of 17 yards came against LSU on the road.
Entering the 2011 season Lutzenkirchen already holds the single-season record for touchdown receptions by a tight end with five and is second on the career touchdowns list at the position with seven.
Also on the list from the SEC are Brandon Barden from Vanderbilt, Orson Charles from Georgia and Michael Williams from Alabama.
