Auburn, Ala.--It took a while but Auburn finally announced its schedule for the 2011-2012 men’s basketball season that will tip off in less than 2 1/2 months. Auburn announced its 2012 baseball schedule before getting its basketball schedule finalized.
Coach Tony Barbee’s second Auburn team will open the hoops season on Nov. 11th with a home game vs. McNeese State and will begin SEC play on January 7th at Vanderbilt. The Tigers finished 11-20 overall last season and were 4-14 in league games.
The Tigers will compete in the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic and will play Seton Hall as part of the SEC-Big East Challenge.
“Like I said last year, you have to build your schedule to where you think your team or program is in its building stage,” Barbee said. “Obviously last year we had some contests against some higher quality teams, but not an abundance of them. This year I think you see the natural progression of the team, which leads to the natural progression of the schedule.
“We have a renewed series with Florida State that we start down there,” the coach added. “They are a team that should have been in last year’s Final Four, a team that was a Sweet 16 team and has a lot of talented players coming back.
“I’m excited about the Diamond Head Classic in Hawaii with an outstanding field of multiple NCAA Tournament teams in the field with Clemson, Xavier and Kansas State,” Barbee said. “You are talking multiple NCAA Tournament teams which is something we aspire to be. To get there, you have to play teams like that so you know where you stand and hopefully come out on top in more than your fair share of them.”
Kenny Gabriel, a senior forward, will be a key player for the Tigers.
The schedule includes the possibility of playing nine teams that were in NCAA Tournament last season and 10 that played in the NIT. The SEC Tournament will be played at the New Orleans Arena.
