"Gym Rat" Leads Tigers Past Belmont's Bruins

Camille Glymph shoots for the Tigers.

Camille Glymph came off the bench to spark Auburn to a victory in the home opener for Coach Nell Fortner's team.

Auburn, Ala.--Sparked by 18 points from reserve sophomore guard Camille Glymph, the Auburn women's basketball team defeated visiting Belmont 80-53 on Tuesday night.

The Tigers improved to 2-0 with the victory, which was the 800th in Auburn women's basketball history. Belmont fell to 0-3.

Coach Nell Fortner improved her record to 7-0 in Auburn home game season openers.

"Once again, I thought that as at Mercer in our opener our bench is really providing a lot of good things for us," Fortner said. "We have slow starts and can sub in off the bench and kind of jump start us a little bit.

"Camille Glymph continues to just really be such a threat on the floor just shooting the ball so well," Fortner said. "We have a lot of weapons on this team, and it's nice, as a coach, to be able to go to that as the game goes."

Commenting on Glymph, Fortner added, ""She's just a shooter. That kid is such a gym rat. I can't even begin to tell you how much time she spends in the gym. You hear people talk about players that are gym rats, but I really think in all my coaching career she's probably the number one gym rat that I've ever coached. She literally eat, breathes and that's it for her. It's nice to see that kind of work pay off for a kid."

Glymph, who was hurt much of last season and not full speed after she returned from a hip injury, hit 6-11 field goals on Tuesday night at the Auburn Arena. Eight of the shots were three-pointers and she connected on five. It was the first time she has led the Tigers in scoring.

"The first two shots I took obviously they did not go in, but I just kept the confidence and then they finally started to drop for me and then I got a little bump going once I hit that and one layup and it felt good," Glymph said.

Sophomore forward Tyrese Tanner scored 16 points for the Tigers and another sophomore forward, Jassany Williams, added 12 points.

Auburn out-rebounded the Bruins 35-32 with senior Chantel Hilliard leading the Tigers with nine.

Auburn returns to action on Friday with a road trip to face eighth-ranked Duke.
