Auburn, Ala.--The Auburn women’s basketball rallied from a 26-19 halftime deficit to defeat George Washington 55-47 on Wednesday night at the Auburn Arena.

Auburn opened the second half on a 10-2 run to take the lead on the way to improving its record to 3-2 while George Washington fell to 1-3.

Senior Blanche Alverson led the Tigers with 14 points while Tyrese Tanner added 11 points and Hasina Muhammad scored 10. Parrisha Simmons led the Tigers on the boards with eight rebounds.

“Obviously, it was a tale of two halves,” Auburn coach Nell Fortner said. “I’m not sure we could have played much worse in the first half, and I thought we did some really nice things in the second half. We had some players really step up.

“They were challenged, and they met the challenge,” the coach said. “When you’re starting a freshman in Hasina Muhammad, she’s going to do things that freshmen do, and that is not always be ready to play, not always take care of the ball good enough, but in the second half she really came through for us big time. I think she showed us what she’s capable of being all the time and what we want her to be all the time.

“Blanche Alverson, just a veteran player,” Fortner said. “She had ice in her veins tonight in the second half, just knocked down some really big important shots so that was good, and obviously we hit our free throws in the second half, which we didn’t do in the first half.”

Auburn returns to action with a 2 p.m. home game on Sunday vs. USC-Upstate.
