In my opinion the National Football League’s New York Giants are getting an interesting young lineman with their draft pick from Auburn, offensive tackle Brandon Mosley.
I think New York’s decision to take Mosley in the fourth round is a good thing for Brandon and a good thing for the Super Bowl champions. I know he has to be excited about being selected by such a good football team.
I am sure he would have preferred being chosen earlier in the draft, but he has his foot in the door now with the opportunity to prove he is ready for the NFL.
Mosley’s path to pro football is not the normal one. He never even played on the offensive line until he came to Auburn in 2010 after lining up at tight end and defensive end in junior college.
Auburn’s coaches saw the potential for him to grow physically and develop into an outstanding offensive lineman so they took a chance that they could convert him into a tackle when they signed him out of Coffeyville Community College in Kansas.
He showed his adaptability right away once he got to Auburn. In the strength and conditioning program he added size and muscle, and during his first fall on the Auburn campus he took over as the starting right tackle. He played surprisingly well for a novice at the position as he helped the Tigers win the SEC and BCS championships.
Mosley followed his junior season with good play as a senior and now has a chance to make a living from the sport thanks to a lot of hard work and sacrifices on his part to get to where he is. If I had to make a wager on how he is going to do as a pro, I would bet he will make it with the Giants.
Brandon Mosley is shown at an Auburn football practice.
It will be interesting to see where he lines up in the NFL. I think he is a good enough athlete to play tackle or move inside and play guard if his team needs him there.
An Auburn athlete who is moving into his prime as a professional is Jason Dufner, who has been playing about as well as anybody on the PGA Tour for the last year and a half. It was a thrill to see him step up and win his first PGA Tour tournament title with an exciting playoff victory over Ernie Els.
Watching him play golf he sure seems to have a calm demeanor in pressure situations. Of course, sometimes what you see on the outside is not what is going on in the inside, but one thing is for sure about Jason is that he is a great competitor, and that was evident long before he won his first PGA Tour title. He worked for many years to get his game to the point where he could be one of the best players in the world and he deserves the success he is enjoying.
At the same time Dufner was winning the Zurich Open in New Orleans another Auburn pro athlete, Atlanta Braves pitcher Tim Hudson, made his season debut and helped his team to a victory. Hudson has been one of the top pitchers in Major League baseball for many years so it was exciting to see him have success coming back from an injury that led to a late start to his 2012 season.
Hudson is one of the top athletes to come through Auburn University. The current edition of the baseball Tigers got off to a good start this year before falling into a midseason slump. Maybe sweeping Tennessee will get the Tigers kick-started for a strong finish to the regular season that will lead to success in the postseason, which I think would be exciting to a lot of Auburn fans.
