A Big Cat Weekend visitor was back in Auburn and discusses the trip and his interest in the Tigers…
Johnson Chooses AU: "It Just Feels Like Home"
Cooper City, Fla.—A safety prospect that has made two trips to Auburn in the last three months, athletic Lemond Johnson made his decision public on Wednesday when he committed to the Tigers over LSU, Vanderbilt, Kentucky, Boston College, North Carolina State, Wake Forest and Duke after talking things over with his family. In choosing Auburn, Johnson said the program, coaching staff and university had everything he's looking for and when his mom got a look she fell in love with the Tigers as well. That made everything fall into place he said. "I talked with Coach (Gene) Chizik this morning for a little while and I also talked with Coach (Willie) Martinez and the defensive coordinator (Brian VanGorder) and I felt at home with Auburn," Johnson tells Inside The Auburn Tigers. "The Big Cat Weekend was a great event and I really liked it. "I just really wanted to get my mom up there and once she got there she loved it," he added. "That basically sealed the deal for me. Auburn is just a great place and a great atmosphere. It's a football atmosphere. It's a great place and being able to play football in the SEC just makes it better. That's what I like about it." Athletic enough to play quarterback, safety and wide receiver for his high school team, Johnson said that Auburn is recruiting him to play in the secondary. After having a chance to talk to both VanGorder and Martinez, he said he's excited about that opportunity. "Coach Martinez is a great guy," Johnson said. "We've talked about me playing safety and some nickel as well. That's what I like to do. I like to be around the ball. That's what they are looking at me to do." With recruiting heating up and more and more offers coming on board after teams had a chance to see him in the spring, Johnson said it's nice to get his decision out of the way so he can focus on his senior year. "It's good because it was really starting to get kind of hectic," Johnson noted. "It's good that I have seen the school that I really like. It's an SEC school so that's really good. It's big-time football. "There were some schools that were hitting me from the beginning that I was considering mainly because they had been there for a long time," he added. "Those were schools like Boston College and a few others. Auburn was just the school for me." With his decision firmly in hand, Johnson said he doesn't feel the need to visit anywhere else because he knows where his future is going to be. Getting to learn more and more about the program and university, Johnson said he's got just one message for the fans waiting to see him on the Plains. "War Eagle!"
