Five-star prospect Reuben Foster made news on Thursday with his announcement at Auburn High School that he will play college football for the Auburn University Tigers instead of the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Auburn, Ala.--What is shaping up as a promising 2013 football recruiting class for Coach Gene Chizik’s Tigers received a major boost when Scout.com’s No. 1 rated linebacker in the nation switched his commitment from Alabama to Auburn.

Reuben Foster, a 6-1, 240-pound five-star prospect who will play for Auburn High School this fall, read a statement at the AHS cafeteria on Thursday afternoon that he plans to sign with Auburn.

Foster said his decision is final to play college football for the Tigers and he is "100 percent committed" to Auburn.

"Over the last three weeks I really put in a lot of thought and time on where I want to finish my football career," he said, noting he is "blessed" he has several great opportunities on which college to attend.

"I want to make an announcement so I can put this behind and get on to the work I need to do for high school, and getting prepared for college, both athletically and academically," he said.

“I am going to enroll at Auburn University. I have a lot of respect for Alabama, the coaches and all of the other people and the fans, but at the end of the day I feel like Auburn University is the place to be for me and my family. It has the best situation for me and my family.

"I am 100 percent confident with my final decision," Foster added. "I feel great about my decision and I am excited to get started.”

His head coach, Tim Carter, said that Foster and his family requested that there not be any questions for the high school senior after his statement that was attended by several dozen of his Auburn High teammates.

Carter said he got a call from Foster and his family on Wednesday night that the linebacker wanted to make a statement and wrap up recruiting. Although he had committed to Alabama in March, he had still be visiting other campuses.

"We wanted to give him a venue to do that," Carter said. "He has had a lot of great choices as a I have mentioned before."

Carter said he approved of how the linebacker handled the recruiting process. "He is ready to get this behind him and make a decision so he can focus in on his senior year, have a great senior year, focus in on his academics as well athletics, playing with some of his teammates who are here today, playing with his teammates and hopefully pursue a state championship.

“The family has in this process, since I have been with them in the short time, done a great job of looking at all of the options and different things that he needed to consider," Carter added. "He has been very thorough in this process.”

Foster transferred to AHS in the spring from Troup County, Ga., High, where he made 144 solo tackles with 41 assists as a junior. He was credited with 34 tackles behind the line of scrimmage, including 18 quarterback sacks.

Reuben Foster is shown earlier this month at The Opening camp that was held in Oregon.

He burst on to the scene as one of the top young prospects in the Southeast as a sophomore in 2010 when he made 112 tackles.

In March, when he was a student at Troup County High, he announced that he would sign with Alabama, but since then has visited Auburn and other colleges, including Georgia and the University of Washington.

Foster is Auburn’s second commitment this week joining four-star prospect Jason Smith from McGill-Toolen High in Mobile. The Tigers now have 16 verbal commitments for the 2012 signee class. With Foster on board, Auburn moved into Scout.com's Top 10 rankings in recruiting with a No. 9 national ranking.
