Davidson (N.C.) Day quarterback Will Grier broke the national record for passing yards in a high school game Friday. The junior led the Patriots to a wild 104-80 win over Harrells Christian.

Will Grier had one of the best performances in high school football history last Friday night.

The North Carolina prep quarterback set a national record with 837 passing yards and tied another national record with 10 touchdown passes in a 104-80 win that had stat sheets exploding.

The previous national record was 764 yards, set by Pacific Palisades (Calif.) quarterback David Koral in 2000, according to reports.

Grier projects as a top recruit in the 2014 class. He's currently a four-star prospect ranked No. 6 at his position by Scout.com.

It was also a special day for Davidson Day's head coach, Chad Grier -- Will's father.

"Will can throw and he does a great job," Chad Grier said. "He really understands our scheme. He does a nice job of coverage recognition and going through his progressions and getting the ball to the right guys. Once he does, we have a lot of guys that know what to do with it."

While the younger Grier’s numbers got a lot of attention, his father assured it was a team effort.

"Our kids executed really, really well on offense," he said. "Our offensive line -- we start three freshmen –- they have improved so much. Will did not have much pressure on him at all."

What makes the younger Grier such a good quarterback?

"He’s just really poised and he’s really accurate," said his father. "Will does a nice job of throwing it on time and throwing it to the right place. He can just make so many throws. I’m spoiled because I don’t ever expect him to miss a throw, but he’s a 17-year-old kid. He’s probably going to miss a throw every now and again, but we are so used to him making every throw. That’s the part that blows me away."

While Davidson Day thought they would have success on offense, no one -- including the coach -- could imagine a total of 184 points being scored.

"I felt like we were going to be able to move the ball and score, but I didn’t have any idea that we were going to score 104 points in a football game," Chad Grier said. "I also didn’t have a plan to give up 80. In the heat of it, you just have to figure out how you can go score again."

Part of the reason for that was Harrells Christian running back Russell Washington, who had an amazing game of his own, rushing for 426 yards and eight touchdowns.

"The only thing I was trying to figure out was how in the world could we stop Washington -– and what play could we run next?" Chad Grier said. "We felt that we were going to have to outscore them. It was just one of those games."

Despite his record-breaking performance and all the attention he has received, do not expect any of that to change Grier.

"He’s just a fiercely competitive kid, who’s always been about winning," said his father. "He’s not caught up in stats and he’s not caught up in recruiting. He just wants to win."

Chad Grier also says his son has improved a lot since last fall.

"Last year, he would try to use athleticism rather than his arm," Chad Grier said. "He would feel pressure and just take off. If he did not like what he saw right away, he would feel like he could make a play with his feet, and a lot of times he did. So we looked at it during the spring on film and talked about him hanging in the pocket and going through your progressions. He spent a lot of time working on that."

On the season, the 6-foot-3, 185-pound signal-caller has thrown for over 5,300 yards and 64 touchdowns. Grier has scholarship offers from East Carolina, Florida, Louisiana-Lafayette, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Wake Forest.

Davidson Day will play Christ School for the NCISAA Division II State Championship this Friday.
