Gators in the NFL: Conference Championships

San Francisco 49ers DT Ray McDonald

The conference championship matchups already set it up for a former Florida player to win a Super Bowl ring, but the outcomes secured that it will be just one former Gator to get a ring this year.

The first matchup of the day between the Atlanta Falcons and San Francisco 49ers had just one former Florida player on each side of the field.

Falcons linebacker Mike Peterson saw time with the defense at linebacker but didn't record a statistic.

San Francisco defensive tackle Ray McDonald started and recorded three tackles.

The nightcap between the Baltimore Ravens and the New England Patriots saw two Gators all over the field during the game.

Brandon Spikes started the game at linebacker and led the Patriots with 11 tackles, adding a quarterback hit. Tight end Aaron Hernandez started and made nine catches for 83 yards. Hernandez also had a six-yard rush. Jermaine Cunningham saw time on the field at defensive end for the Patriots and made one tackle. He played mostly as a pass rush specialist on third downs.

The only former Gator that has played for the Ravens this season is Deonte Thompson. After handling kickoff return duties early in the year, Thompson wasn't active on Sunday night.

Thompson or McDonald will win a Super Bowl ring in two weeks when the Ravens face the 49ers in New Orleans.
