Before his commitment to
Auburn
University in July,
Jordan Wilkins
was the top running back and one of the top players on
Vanderbilt
's board. After a dismal 2012 season, Auburn fired head coach
Gene Chizik
along with running backs coach
Curtis Luper
, who recruited Wilkins. VandyMania.com caught up with Wilkins to see what direction his recruiting is going in after his senior season at St. Benedict at Auburndale High School in Memphis, Tenn.
"I actually decommitted from Auburn two days ago," said Jordan Wilkins. "I took an official visit last weekend to
Ole Miss
. It went really well. I'm thinking about taking an official visit to Vanderbilt and
Arkansas
but I haven't made up my mind yet."
After a sensational junior season, Wilkins (6-foot2, 215-pounds) rushed for 1,700 yards and 25 touchdowns and was on track for an even bigger senior performance before he suffered a season-ending injury.
"In the fifth game of the season I broke my fibula," he explained. "I had surgery and it took three and a half months to recover before I was cleared. Before I went out, I had 1,011 yards and 18 touchdowns. I felt like I was playing more physically this season. I was running downhill faster. I added more weight and bulk in the off season so it took a lot more to take me down. Usually, I hit my peak toward the end of the season, but, unfortunately, I wasn't able to do that this year."
A big asset Vanderbilt has that no other school can offer Wilkins is the chance to play with his older brother, Trey. The elder Wilkins son joined the Commodores prior to the season after spending a year at Harding University. While he didn't see the field as a sophomore, Wilkins is expected to press coaches for playing time in the spring.
Jordan Wilkins is now 100-percent after rehabbing from his injury and is playing basketball at St. Benedict's. He chose not to elaborate on his parting of the ways with Auburn and said he'll likely know more about taking the Nashville visit later in the week.
