2014 DB Talks About Auburn Offer

Stephen Roberts

Opelika junior defensive back Stephen Roberts talks about getting an offer from the Auburn Tigers.

Opelika, Ala.—Following a standout junior season that saw him help the Opelika Bulldogs to the 6A title game before falling to Hoover, 2014 defensive back prospect Stephen Roberts has seen his recruiting take off in recent weeks.

Starting with an offer from Alabama with Kentucky also coming on today, the talented cornerback got more good news on Wednesday when the Auburn Tigers offered him. He says the news came during school and brightened up his day.

"I found out today," Roberts tells Inside The Auburn Tigers. "Coach Blackmon told me that Coach Malzahn wanted to talk to me on the phone. I called him and he told me he wanted to make an offer to me. It kind of shocked me for a second, but I'm excited.

"It's big for me," he adds. "I figured they were going to offer me. Being right here in my backyard it was exciting. It's just a blessing to get the offer."

Planning to visit Auburn on Feb. 23 for a Junior Day on the Plains, a day when Auburn is expecting a large number of prospects on hand, Roberts says he's anxious to get to know the rest of the staff better after meeting Coach Melvin Smith recently.

"I met Coach Smith already," Roberts says. "I think this year they are going to be better with the new coaches. Their offense is going to be hurry-up, which will be good for them. The defensive coordinator has changed the defense up some too. I think it will be a good season for them."

With three offers on the board and more coming his way, Roberts says he's just going to take his time before making a decision.

"I'm going to take my time with everything," Roberts notes. "I want to find the best school with the best education."

Roberts becomes the second Opelika junior to get an offer from the Auburn Tigers, joining H-Back Jakell Mitchell. For a pair of guys that have grown up playing together since young football, he says it's exciting to think about the possibility of playing on the next level.

"Jakell is already talking to me," Roberts says. "He told me it would be kind of fun to play against each other, but he wanted to play on the same team. We've been on the same team most of the time and we want to keep that going."

As a junior Roberts finished with 64 tackles, nine tackles for a loss, and four interceptions with three returned for touchdowns.
