Demopolis, Ala.—While Demetrius Kemp gets much of the attention for the Demopolis Tigers along with defensive end Tyler Merriweather, a player that has a chance to be one of the sleepers in the 2014 recruiting class is speedy wide receiver Cortez Lewis.
Hearing from South Alabama, Furman, The Citadel, Southern Miss, Alabama State, and several other schools at the moment with offers from South Alabama and The Citadel, Lewis is an interesting prospect at wide receiver and could have a chance to add some bigger offers once he gets into his senior season.
A standout at a recent Auburn summer camp, the 6-1, 192 Lewis has a time of 4.5 seconds in the 40-yard dash and a vertical leap of 37 inches. With that kind of athleticism and the ability to catch the ball in traffic, Lewis says his opportunity to show the Tigers what he can do was a fun one for him.
“It went pretty good,” Lewis says. “I felt comfortable there and liked the stadium. I feel like I played hard.
“I really like the coaching staff,” he adds. “They were pretty cool. Coach (Dameyune) Craig was a laid back guy. He seems to be a very good coach. Auburn was pretty nice.”
A starter since his sophomore season for the Tigers at wide receiver, Lewis says he plays mostly offense but also plays some defensive back and all special teams on the high school level. While he’s a versatile player for Demopolis, he feels like his best position is going to be on offense down the road.
“I feel like my strengths are getting off the ball and just catching passes,” Lewis says. “I also like to block. I like to hit.”
Hoping to add an offer from Southern Miss soon, Lewis says he’s interested in the Golden Eagles along with Auburn, Alabama, Florida and Georgia. “I have talked to them a good bit,” he says of Southern Miss. “I went to Alabama State’s camp and they were there. They liked how I performed.”
