Hoover 2015 running back Bradrick Shaw talks about his Auburn camp experience and getting ready for his opportunity this fall with the Bucs.

Hoover, Ala.--Competing in football at Hoover High means that as a young player you usually have to wait your turn. That is the case for talented 2015 back Bradrick Shaw.

Playing behind Calen Campbell last season, Shaw didn’t see much action for the Bucs on the way to the team winning the Class 6A state title, but this season should be different.

At 6-2, 198 pounds Shaw is a physical presence and should provide power in the running game for Hoover this season. Already with an offer from Mississippi State and getting interest from Southern Miss, USC and Texas in addition to Auburn, Shaw made a trip to the Plains last weekend to take part in the Tigers’ one-day camp. Earning a spot in the top group along with fellow underclassmen Kerryon Johnson and Malik Miller from Madison Academy and Nick Gibson from Pinson Valley, Shaw noted it was an awesome experience and he was excited to have the opportunity to show what he could do.

“The camp was great,” he said. “I did pretty good. I got to meet the running back coach (Tim Horton) and play with a lot of great players. It was just a great experience.

“I was excited to be with the best,” he added. “I’m trying to be the best. You have to beat the best to be the best. I’m trying to get my name up there. They already had offers and I’m trying to do what I do so they can compare me with those guys.”

Spending a great deal of time with Horton and working with what looks to be the best young group of running backs from Alabama in recent years, Shaw showed good explosion and soft hands coming out of the backfield. That should serve him well this season at Hoover and could also make him an interesting player for Auburn to keep an eye on as well.

“I think I did great,” Shaw said. “The running back coach liked me. They said I’m a special kid and they’re going to be looking for me and keeping up with me during the season to see how I do. That’s very exciting to me. I grew up an Auburn fan so that’s great.

“It would mean a lot,” he added of possibly getting an offer from the Tigers. “It would mean I’m getting there. It would mean that all the hard work I’m putting in is paying off.”

This week Hoover will take part in the National 7-on-7 in and around its own campus before hitting the practice fields to prepare for the defense of the 6A crown. Shaw said he can’t wait to finally have the opportunity to be the go-to guy in the running game and he’s just looking forward to doing his part.

“I’m very excited,” Shaw said. “I have been playing on the varsity since my freshman year, but I have been behind great guys. This year I will finally get to show what I can do.”
