Pat's Picks: Coach Dye Predicts Week 4 Games

Coach Pat Dye

College Football Hall of Fame coach Pat Dye picks the winners and losers in this week's games.

After winning their Southeastern Conference opener vs. Mississippi State, Coach Gus Malzahn's Auburn Tigers will see the competition level rise again this week as they take on a Top 10 opponent on the road.

Auburn has improved each week and will need to keep the trend going to have a chance to pull off an upset against an LSU team that has looked very good offensively in its first three wins.

If Auburn can step up with a strong performance in Baton Rouge this could be one of the better games of the week. The schedule around the SEC and the country does not look very inviting for college football fans.

Here is a look at some of the games outside the SEC:

Arizona State at Stanford--The Sun Devils won a heck of a battle last week vs. Wisconsin. They also got a couple of breaks with Wisconsin's flawed strategy at the end of the game and how the officials handled the clock. This week's contest should be a close game, too, but I like Stanford to give Arizona State its first loss.

Michigan State at Notre Dame--The Irish struggled to beat Purdue of the Big 10 last week, but should have enough firepower to handle another Big 10 opponent this week as the Spartans visit Notre Dame's stadium.

Utah State at Southern Cal--The visitors could keep this interesting for a while, but I like the Trojans' talent to be the difference.

Taking a look at this week's SEC games.

Vanderbilt at UMass--Vandy shouldn't have any problems winning on the road against an 0-3 opponent.

North Texas at Georgia--Georgia wins in a mismatch.

Colorado State at Alabama--Alabama wins in a mismatch.

SMU at Texas A&M--Look for plenty of points to be scored in this game. In a renewal of an old series from their Southwest Conference days the Aggies should have no problem with the visiting Mustangs.

Tennessee at Florida--It will be closer than last week's beatdown the Vols took out at Oregon, but Tennessee is going to suffer another loss this week. The Gators have given the Vols problems for many years now.

Missouri at Indiana--Look for the Tigers to improve to 3-0 with a road win vs. the Hoosiers of the Big 10.

Arkansas at Rutgers--The Razorbacks' trip to the East Coast looks a lot more challenging than Vandy's visit. This could be a very tough game for Arkansas. I am going with Rutgers, a team that beat the Razorbacks last year in Arkansas.

Troy at Mississippi State--With quarterback Tyler Russell questionable for this game due to his concussion, I am picking the upset and going with the Trojans to win in Starkville.

Auburn at LSU--I am going to go with another upset and pick Auburn to win this one and I have several reasons for it.

First, its time for Auburn to win in Baton Rouge. Also, I think Coach Malzahn's team has improved each week and will be the hungrier football team on Saturday night at Tiger Stadium. Even though it is his first SEC road game as a starting quarterback, I have a feeling Nick Marshall is the type of guy who can handle the pressure of making his first road start as an SEC quarterback.

This certainly is a challenge for Auburn because I think LSU has improved offensively compared to recent teams Les Miles has coached.

(Last week's record: 11-1)

(Overall Record: 37-6)
