Dye-Gest: A-Day A Good Time to Visit Auburn

Coach Pat Dye

Hall of Fame coach Pat Dye writes about the activities going on this weekend in Auburn including the annual A-Day football game.

This is a come to Auburn weekend for folks who can make the trip and the ones who do will have plenty to keep them busy. I know it is Easter Weekend, but any Auburn person who can make it will enjoy the trip, I believe. It will be hard to find a more beautiful place to be with the spring flowers blooming and there is so much going on with a ton of activities planned.

I am involved in our annual Spring Fling on Friday, which is a fundraiser for the School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences. Those events have been a lot of fun in the past and I am looking forward to this year's party. Bo Jackson has his bike-a-thon charity event this weekend and has a wine and cheese deal on Friday night with an auction. There are going to be festivities all over town so those are just two of those types of events that are taking place.

On Saturday there is the annual A-Day football game and Friday, Saturday and Sunday the baseball team will be at Plainsman Park for games vs. South Carolina. Also on Saturday and Sunday at the Hutsell-Rosen Track and Field the War Eagle Invitational will be going on.

If you go to the football game on Saturday it doesn't matter what happens--Auburn is going to win so there is no way to come to Auburn and not come away feeling good. My guess is fans will like what they see on Saturday from Gus Malzahn's Tigers. I have had the opportunity to watch the Tigers practice and I am excited about the team's potential in all areas.

I know Coach Malzahn and his staff have been working on rebuilding the kicking game and I think they have a chance to be solid in this area again.

They have also been mixing and matching players in the secondary and at other places on defense and offense, which is something they have the opportunity to do with so many experienced players returning. I know the team must replace some good seniors in the secondary from last year's squad, but I have a feeling the Tigers will have a chance to be better in those areas and the same is true on the defensive line and with the linebackers.

Offensively, I can't see this group not being an explosive football team and that starts with the quarterbacks. I think the Tigers have two really good ones with Nick Marshall and Jeremy Johnson returning and if I was the coach I wouldn't be afraid to put the third quarterback out there, Jonathan Wallace. I believe he is good enough to win with and he probably knows the offense as well as any player on the team.

Whoever is passing the football will have an improved group of receivers to throw to this season and one of the reasons for that is newcomer D'haquille Williams. He has come in from junior college and been consistently been making impressive plays in practice. Players who do that will do the same thing in games.

I hope a lot of people come to Auburn this weekend and have a lot of fun. It's going to be quite a party.
