This Cornerback Is Berry Talented
Atlanta, Ga.--For athletic cornerback Eric Berry, Saturday's Scout.com Combine on the campus of Georgia Tech wasn't something he needed to draw the attention of recruiting experts and college coaches. This time last year he did just that as a sophomore at a similar combine in Auburn. Coming off a solid season for Creekside High, Berry measured in at 6-0, 182, but it was what he did on the field that day that caught everyone's attention. A year younger than most everyone in attendance, Berry ran a 4.46 40-yard dash and had a vertical leap of 32 inches. Now a year older and stronger Berry did even better this time around. Berry blazes the turf in the 40-yard dash. Showing the burst that has made him one of Georgia's top prospects for 2007, Berry ran the fastest time of anyone in attendance on Saturday with a 4.31 in the 40. Combine that with a solid showing in all aspects of the workout and you have perhaps the top cornerback prospect in the Peach State. Berry said that the day turned out exactly as he had hoped going into it. "It was pretty intense," Berry said. "There was a lot of good competition out there. I met a lot of new guys and had some fun. That was basically it. I had a pretty good day." The day continues a stellar spring for Berry that has seen him skyrocket up the recruiting charts since last season. Because of that he's been very busy not only talking on the phone, but text messaging coaches back and forth pretty much everyday. He said that part of things has been pretty crazy and he didn't really know what to expect when the calls began soon after signing day in February. "It has been pretty hectic with the text messages," Berry said. "My mom has been on me about the telephone bills. It has been pretty hectic. Things kind of snuck up on me a little bit and caught me off guard." At the moment Berry said that he has just under a dozen offers with some of the top schools in the country showing him a lot of love heading into the summer before his senior season. "I have around 10 offers," Berry said. "They are from Georgia, Tennessee, Texas, Miami, Duke, Georgia Tech, Ohio State, USC, Auburn and Notre Dame. Right now Georgia, Miami, Tennessee, Ohio State and Auburn stand out to me." Unlike many top prospects Berry said that he plans to take it easy over the summer and not hit the camp circuit every weekend. Instead, he said that he'll spend a lot of time on and off the field with his teammates as they try to finish off their careers in style. "I'm going to work out with my team and get our chemistry right," Berry said. "I want to make sure those guys are motivated. After that I'll take my visits next year and wait for signing day."
