Mobile, Ala.--Wadley High School star Terrell Zachery was smiling after his final game as a high school player, just a week before reporting to Auburn University for summer classes and a head start on his freshman football season.

The record-setting wide receiver scored all the points the Alabama All-Stars needed to take victory over the Mississippi All-Stars in the annual showdown featuring top graduated seniors from both states at Mobile’s Ladd-Peebles Stadium. His first quarter TD reception put his team up 7-3 and with the defense leading the way the Alabama All-Stars took a 24-3 victory despite netting just 93 yards of total offense in four quarters.

“The whole week was great,” Zachery tells Inside the Auburn Tigers. “It is nice to show everybody you can play, no matter what size school you come from.”

Zachery put up his big numbers at the state’s Class A level, the smallest of the six classifications, and was dominating week in and week out. On Monday, he joins the big boys at Auburn as he begins his adjustment to college life as he reports to begin college life with other members of AU's 2006 freshman signee class.

With Auburn having to replace three senior receivers, it is a great opportunity for early action for Zachery and fellow all-star game teammate Tim Hawthorne from Class 5A state champion Homewood.

When asked if he has specific goals for his freshman season at Auburn, Zachery says, “No, sir. I just want to get playing time.”

A key issue to earn playing time will be to report in good physical condition and get in even better shape working out on campus this summer prior to the start of preseason practice in August.

“I believe I am in good shape,” says Zachery, who was still very fresh after four quarters of summer football on a cooler and less humid than normal evening in normally hot and muggy Mobile. “I have been working out.”

Zachery notes that he enjoyed the whole all-star experience, including the practices leading up to the competition.

“Being around the top players in Alabama was a great experience,” he says. “You learn stuff every day working out against the top defensive backs.”

Zachery says he checked in at 6-1, 190 pounds for the all-star week. “That is a good weight for me now, but I think I can improve it though.”

A player who led his team to the state playoff semi-finals in football and put up impressive numbers in basketball, Zachery should be one of the better all-around athletes in Coach Tommy Tuberville’s 2006 signee class. Nothing he did in Mobile changed that impression.

“It is nice to show everybody you can play, no matter what size of school you come from,” Zachery says.

When asked what were the highlights of all-star week, he notes, “Definitely scoring the first touchdown of the game is the highlight for me along with the Alabama team winning the game.”

Commenting on the TD pass from American Christian of Tuscaloosa quarterback Chris Smelley, who will play at South Carolina, Zachery says, “It was a just get open route over the middle route. I sat down there, caught the ball and took it over the goal line. I knew I scored, but I had to wait to see what the referee said.”

Terrell Zachery lobbies the officials for a touchdown ruling in the first quarter of the all-star game.

The officials, who had a brief conference discussing the play, finally signalled the touchdown, something Zachery has seen before--53 previous times before in high school after making a catch. He finished as the leading receiver in Alabama high school history in total yardage with 4,672. He finished up strongly as a senior with 66 catches for 1,477 yards and 17 receiving TDs and a total of 31 touchdowns for the season with 2,549 all-purpose yards.

He also won the respect of Wadley High coach Randy Sparks. “I tell people every day that as great as he is as a player, he is probably a better person, and that is saying a lot,” Spark says.

Zachery will move to campus along with all-star game teammates Jermarcus Ricks, Zaccheus Etherdige and Hawthorne on Sunday.
