Auburn, Ala.--DeWanna Bonner’s return to action was impressive Friday night as the sophomore forward led Auburn to an 85-47 women’s basketball victory with 28 points and 11 rebounds.

Auburn improved to 3-0 with the 85-47 win over Winston-Salem State, a team that fell to 0-3.

“It was nice to have DeWanna back on the floor and to see her be so aggressive,” said Auburn coach Nell Fortner.

Bonner hit 10-19 field goals, was 7-7 at the free throw line, dished out five assists and made three steals in 29 minutes.

Playing with a protective mask over her nose that was injured in an exhibition game, Bonner helped the Tigers take a 42-32 rebounding edge and a 50.7 percent to 30.9 percent advantage in field goal shooting.

“DeWanna is not afraid of anything,” Fortner said. “She is a very tough kid, a very durable kid.”

The Tigers got 11 points and 11 assists from guard Tamela McCorvey , 12 points from Alexis Ogubie, 10 points from Sherrell Hobbs and eight points and seven rebounds from Keke Carrier.

With Bonner available, the Tigers are up to nine healthy players.

Friday night’s game wasn’t in doubt for long. Auburn shot 57.1 percent from the field in the first half to build a 46-17 lead at intermission.

The Tigers were not as sharp in the second half, outscoring the Rams 39-30.

Winston-Salem State was led by Candace Saunders and Shalona Carter, who each scored 10 points.

Next on the schedule for the Tigers is a game on Thursday vs. Xavier of Ohio that will be played in the U.S. Virgin Islands where the Tigers will also play Marquette and Western Michigan.
