Honolulu--Auburn’s leading tackler the past two seasons hopes to make more stops as he and teammate John Vaughn try to impress the pro scouts in Sunday’s Hula Bowl all-star game.

Will Herring, who will wear No. 45 in the 61st edition of the all-star game, will play outside linebacker for the Aina (East) squad in their matchup against the Kai (West) all-stars. Vaughn, Auburn’s all-time scoring leader, will be the kicker for the Aina.

“It’s growing great,” Herring told Inside the Auburn Tigers while sitting on the beach with Vaughn after Thursday’s practice. “John and I are out here having a great time getting our work in.

“We got in Monday night,” he notes. “We missed the (BCS) championship game because we were flying from LA to Hawaii. The first day we were mainly doing interviews and filling out a lot of forms for each NFL organization and we talked to some of the scouts.

“Wednesday was our first day of practice with full pads,” Herring says. “We had a lot of team and a lot of seven on seven live work in game-like situations. We didn’t have a whole lot of individual drills.

“In Thursday’s practice we actually went full speed for a while tackling people all the way to the ground like a scrimmage setting. It was pretty intense. We are having a good time and everything is going great.”

Herring set an Auburn record for career consecutive starts as a senior. In Auburn’s Cotton Bowl victory over Nebraska, he made his 49th straight start for Coach Tommy Tuberville’s Tigers. He made most of those appearances as a safety, but as a senior he moved to outside linebacker and that is where he is playing in the Hula Bowl, which will kick off at 7:35 p.m. CST at Aloha Stadium on Sunday with television coverage on ESPN.

“I am playing sam (strongside) linebacker,” says Herring. “We are keeping everything simple. The offense has only a few formations it can run. It is going to be real vanilla with no motion. We are just going to line up, have a few calls and play ball.”

John Vaughn

John Vaughn was one of three finalists for the Lou Groza Award as the nation's top kicker

Herring has been to Hawaii previously on a family vacation and notes his family will be in Honolulu to watch him play on Sunday. “We may go check out some of the sights,” Herring says. “We came here a couple of years and kind of checked out Pearl Harbor, but me and John are just chillin’ out on the beach by the hotel when we are done after practice.”

Asked if he had tried any surfing this week, Herring says, “Heck, no. I am going to let the tourists do that. I am here for business and a little bit of fun, but nothing extreme.”
