One of Georgia's top athletes chose the Tigers on Friday…
Talking Football With AU's New Commitment
Columbus, Ga.--DeRon Furr, a standout athlete at the Scout.com Southeast Elite 150 Camp in Atlanta, is Auburn's latest football verbal commitment and one of the more interesting prospects the Tigers are recruiting for the 2008 signee class. The quarterback decided to make an early commitment to Auburn so he can concentrate on what is potentially an exciting senior season with Carver High School expected to have a strong squad with Furr and teammate Jarmon Fortson leading the way. "We should be great and we think we can win the whole thing (state championship) this year," Furr tells Inside the Auburn Tigers. "We have a lot of starters returning. This will be the best team I have played with--ever. We have a lot of good athletes on this team that a lot of people have never heard of." The 6-3, 217-pounder is scheduled to start for a third consecutive year at QB and is obviously serious about his football. "I am doing everything I can to get ready for the season," Furr says. "I am getting a personal trainer to work with me on getting stronger and faster." The quarterback is already fast. He has a best 40-yard dash time of 4.52 and was obviously one of the top all-around athletes at the Scout.com 150 camp in Atlanta earlier this month. College coaches at the event were busy writing notes while watching him participate in a variety of drills. Miller Safrit, a recruiting analyst for Scout.com, says the Tigers have added a promising prospect to their commitment list. Safrit says, "Furr is an athletic, thick quarterback with a lot of tools to work with and while some will try to ask if he is a Jason Campbell type of quarterback he is actually almost a complete opposite player with a big arm, thick lower body, and a playmaker on the ground between the tackles. "There are still some holes in his game to work around before he is SEC-ready, but in a year without many great quarterbacks, Furr has the potential to eventually be one of the best." Furr says a trip to Auburn last Sunday to meet with offensive line coach Hugh Nall, who recruits the Columbus area for the Tigers, and quarterback coach and offensive coordinator Al Borges helped him make his decision to play for AU. "They gave me a little info on how Auburn is recruiting me, the depth chart and we talked more about Auburn," he says. "I knew they were interested in me when they came by my school and looked at my film and then watched spring practice. After talking to them in Auburn, I knew they were even more interested." There was a major question on whether or not Auburn was going to offer a quarterback a scholarship this year with Kodi Burns signed in 2007 and two others, Neil Caudle and Steven Ensminger, signed and redshirted the previous year. However, the AU staff decided Furr was definitely the type of player they want in their program. Auburn has also made an offer to Furr's teammate, 6-3, 222 wide receiver Fortson, who was one of the top athletes in the Auburn Junior-Senior camp last weekend. "I didn't get to see him at the camp, but I talked to him and he told me he had a good performance at the camp," Furr says of his teammate. "He came to Auburn and did his thing." Fortson is seriously considering the Tigers, too, the quarterback says and the wide receiver agrees. "Auburn is definitely one of my favorites," Fortson says. As he prepares for his senior season, Furr says, "Right now I think I am a better runner than passer. I am working on staying in the pocket more. I have only been playing quarterback for two seasons. Before that I used to play running back. I like being the quarterback. I like having the ball in my hands all of the time so I can pretty much control the game." Commenting on his goals for his final season of high school football, Furr says the number one concern is to be a team player first and do everything he can to make sure Carver is a winner every Friday night. "Other than that I would like to pass or run for three touchdowns in every game," he says.
