Strongsville, Ohio--The Southeastern Conference is considered by many to be the top football conference in the country year in and year out and often that means kids from all over the United States want to see how they stack up in the SEC. That is the case for wide receiver D.J. Woods as he tells Inside The Auburn Tigers that he plans to camp at Auburn this Saturday to get a taste of southern football.
”We’re flying out Friday and I’m really excited about the camp,” Woods says. “We’re both (Woods and father Derrick Woods Sr.) decided to go down there because I want to experience going against the athletes and what they have and if I can compete with them. I just want to show out at the camp.”
A player getting plenty of attention in the early recruiting process, the 6-0, 170 speedster has over 20 offers with schools such as Penn State, Wisconsin, Iowa, Indiana, Nebraska, Oklahoma State, Michigan State, West Virginia and Pittsburgh already on board, Woods says that he doesn’t know a great deal about Auburn at the moment other than what he’s seen on television.
”We actually just started talking about Auburn this week and decided to go there for a camp,” Woods says. “Really all I want to do is compete with the southern athlete and hopefully get an offer from a school like Auburn.”
Woods took part in a Scout.com Combine in Pittsburgh earlier this summer.
A three-star prospect and the number 54 wide receiver in the country as ranked by Scout.com, Woods is a phenomenal athlete that uses his speed and quickness to be a big play threat for Strongsville. A track star in addition to his duties on the football field, Woods had a long jump of 22 feet in the spring and ran a 4.35 second 40-yard dash. Throw in a short shuttle time of 3.94 seconds at a Scout.com Combine in Pittsburgh and you have a player capable of putting up some big numbers at the receiver position.
That’s just what he did as a junior as he caught 35 passes for 780 yards and eight touchdowns. He also returned four kickoffs with three going for scores and three punt returns with two for touchdowns. He adds that teams pretty much kicked away from him the rest of the season. Also a cornerback, Woods made 49 total tackles with three interceptions.
In addition to wanting to see how he stacks up against athletes from the South, Woods says that one of the reasons Auburn was a team to consider for him was because of the connection with Under Armour. While it wasn’t a deciding factor on where to make the trip, he admits it didn’t hurt Auburn’s image.
“I don’t particularly care whether a school is Nike or Adidas or Under Armour but that’s pretty neat,” Woods says. “I have never seen a school with Under Armour as the sponsor so that’s cool.”
