AU Tied For Lead For Thomas

Chase Thomas

Marietta, Ga.--Following Chase Thomas' official visit to Auburn on Saturday, the defensive end from Walton High School in Marietta says that the Tigers and Stanford Cardinal are his leaders.

"They're still tied at the top with Stanford," he notes, "and then UNC (North Carolina) is below at three.

"I got to Auburn Saturday morning and had breakfast with all of the recruits," Thomas adds. "I went over and got a tour of the whole facility, the academics and the athletic part. I ate lunch at Sewell (Hall) and got to see the Tiger Walk and see all of the pumped up players. It was crazy, the atmosphere, and it was so loud. It was one of the craziest atmospheres. It was awesome. They were tailgating everywhere and the crazy fans were cool."

Thomas gave the Auburn visit an eight on a scale of 1-10, and says that his visit to Palo Alto, Calif., on Sept. 22 was also a good one.

"The atmosphere was completely different," he says of his visit to Stanford, "but in its own aspect it was just as good in its own ways."

Thomas' player host was former high school teammate Bailey Woods, a true freshman tight end redshirting this season for the Tigers.

"We talked a bunch about stuff and the coaches and how they really are," Thomas explains. "It's good to have a friend that I know that goes here. It was good catching up with him."

At 6-4, 210, Thomas is being recruited to play any number of positions up front on the Auburn defense.

"Coach (Will) Muschamp pretty much says I can play any three of the linebacker position or the Quentin Groves position, which is like a rush end but standing up sometimes," Thomas says. "He's just seeing where I go with my weight. If I put on weight then I'll put my hand on the ground. If not I can play the outside linebacker or even inside.

"I think I'm more comfortable with my hand on the ground, but I'll play wherever." he adds.

Thomas, whose Walton High team is still fighting for a state championship, is planning on having a college decision made "hopefully before Christmas," he says. "Right now we're about to go into the quarterfinals. We play M.L.K., who just came off a big win against Harrison. Hopefully we can keep it up. Our offense is doing great and our defense is stepping up when we need to and making big plays."
