Smooth Discusses Official Visit to Auburn

Freddie Smooth

Louisiana lineman Freddie Smooth tells Inside the Auburn Tigers what he thinks of the Auburn football program.

Baton Rouge, La.--Defensive tackle Freddie Smooth says he came to Auburn for his official visit with a high opinion of the Auburn University football program and notes that he came away from the trip even more impressed.

"I had a great time," Smooth tells Inside the Auburn Tigers. "Mike Blanc was my player host. He gave me some great advice. He told me that I should make a good decision by going to college somewhere where I will really fit in and really feel good about my decision."

Smooth says he grew up watching the Tigers play on television before he even started playing the sport and gained an interest in Tommy Tuberville's team. The lineman from Desire Street Academy says that Auburn is definitely high on his list, but he plans to take two more official visits before making his pick.

"I went to Oklahoma on my first visit," he says. "It was pretty nice. I am probably going to LSU next weekend and then the weekend after that to North Carolina. I plan to take all of my visits and then I will make a decision. All of those colleges have offered scholarships."

Smooth is from New Orleans, but relocated to Baton Rouge after Hurricane Katrina ravaged the New Orleans area. Although his family has returned to New Orleans, Smooth attends school in Baton Rouge and goes home on the weekends.

"I started playing football in the ninth grade," he notes. "I was a basketball player before I got to the ninth grade. I went to George Washington Carver in New Orleans and the coach there wanted me to try it. I liked it so much I never played basketball again."

"I went to Desire Street after the storm and it has been good for me," he says. "We also have a good football team. We went to the fourth round of the playoffs."

Smooth plays both ways, but notes that he prefers defense over offensive guard and offensive tackle. He notes that Auburn is recruiting him for defense only. The lineman says he feels good about the way he played this past season. "I had a lot of good games so I can't say that one really stands out from my senior season," he notes.

The big lineman says that his player host did a good job of recruiting him over the weekend. "Mike Blanc told me that Auburn would be a great place for me and that I would have a great chance to play, which is the same thing the coaches were telling me," Smooth says.

Smooth says he currently stands six-foot-four and weighs 306 pounds, but notes he might be bigger by the time he gets to college. "I believe I am still growing," the high school senior says.

Although he gave up basketball, Smooth does compete in another sport. "I am going to throw the shot again for the track team," he says. "Last year I threw it 53 feet with no practice."

Smooth notes that he hasn't decided what he would like to study in college. "I am still asking about different things," he says.
