Former AU Star Adds 2nd World Title

Manchester, England--The day after setting a world record, former Auburn star Kirsty Coventry won a second title at the FINA Short Course World Swimming Championships on Thursday evening.

Coventry, who swims for Zimbabwe, won the 100-meter backstroke with a meet record time of 57.10. The previous day she won the 400 individual medley in a time of 4:26.52 broke the six-year-old record of 4:27.83 held by Jana Klochkova of the Ukraine.

Current AU swimmer Rachel Goh finished fourth in the 100 backstroke and former Tiger Margaret Hoelzer was sixth.

Two other Tigers have been involved in a world record at the FINA Short Course World Championships. Swimming for the U.S. 4x100 freestyle relay team, former Tigers Bryan Lundquist and Doug Van Wie joined Ryan Lochte and Mathan Adrian to swim a time of 3:08.44, breaking the old mark set by the Swedish team eight years ago.

Another AU swimmer, Mark Gangloff, tied for fourth in the 100 breaststroke in a time of 58.14 while Auburn’s Maggie Bird was ninth in the 800 freesytle.
