Two More World Records for AU Swimmers

Manchester, England--A trio of Auburn swimmers won gold medals and set world records on Friday night at the FINA Short Course World Swimming Championships.

Current Auburn women’s swimming team member Kara Denby joined former Tiger Margaret Hoelzer on the winning U.S. 400-meter medley relay team that broke the old record by a fraction of a second.

Another former Tiger, Kirsty Coventry, won her third gold medal at the competition and second a second world record. The three-time Olympic medalist posted a time of 2:00.91 in the 200-meter backstroke to smash the old record of 2:03.24 held by Japan’s Reiko Nakamura.

Denby and Hoelzer joined Jessica Hardy and Rachel Komisarz to swim 3:51.84, breaking the record set by the Australian national team by of 3:51.84. Hoelzer swam the leadoff backstroke leg in 58.79 for the U.S. team while Denby swam the anchor freestyle leg in a 52.66.

The competition continues through Sunday.
