Louden, Tenn.--Auburn struggled on the opening of three days of play at the SEC Women’s Golf Championship on Friday at the Tennessee National Golf Club.

Auburn’s 22-over-par 310 total puts the ninth-ranked Tigers in a tie for eighth place with LSU 13 strokes out of first place that is shared by Arkansas and Florida.

Auburn was led by senior Margaret Shirley and sophomore Candace Schepperle, who shot rounds of 74.

Candace Schepperle finished at two-over-par on Friday.

AU’s No. 1 player, freshman Cydney Clanton, had one of her worst rounds of the season and shot an 81, which tied her with teammate Abigale Schepperle, a senior. The Tigers did not have to count an 83 turned in by junior Mariana Macias.

“I thought we started out strong this morning,” Auburn coach Kim Evans said. “We had a few things that didn’t go our way here and there on the front nine, but I think we will come out ready to go tomorrow.

“This was our first time ever playing on this course and we learned some things today,” Evans added. “We will use today’s experience and come out ready for a good day tomorrow.”

Stacy Lewis of Arkansas, who shot a 69, had the low round of day one.
