Fortner's Tigers Pick Up Bluechip Commitment

Morgan Toles

Coach Nell Fortner's Tigers have picked up their fourth verbal commitment for the 2009 signee class from an impressive prospect.

Tyrone, Ga.--Auburn picked up a verbal commitment on Monday from one of the top women's basketball prospects in the country as Morgan Toles, a point guard from Sandy Creek High School, chose the Tigers.

Toles selected Coach Nell Fortner's team over offers from Georgia, LSU, Duke, South Carolina and others.

Matthew Huddleston, who has coached Toles in AAU ball going back to her ninth grade year when the team won a national championship event, says Auburn is getting a terrific player and person.

"She is just a great kid," Huddleston says. "She is one of the very best prospects in the country. She is a terrific ball-handler and is very, very quick."

Sandy Creek High coach Leslie Cooper says that Toles is an impressive player as a five-foot-eight point guard with tremendous quickness and excellent ball-handling and passing skills. "She makes everybody on the floor better," Cooper says. "When your best player is your hardest worker, everybody else has to step up to the plate."

"Morgan is probably one of the hardest working players I have ever coached," Cooper says. "Basically, she comes in the gym and works hard for two or three hours every day.

"In game situations, she is the leader in the floor," Cooper says. "She gets us into the offense from her point guard position. Her strength is that she can penetrate and get to the basket. She also finds the open player wherever they are on the floor."

Toles, who averaged 13 points and 4 1/2 assists as a junior, was an honorable mention All-State pick as she led Sandy Creek to the elite eight round of the state tournament last season after transferring from St. Pius X in Atlanta where she was also a standout.

"I have been playing since I was four years old," says Toles, who notes she likes the players in Fortner's Auburn program. "My mom played in college (University of New Orleans) and my whole family is sports-oriented so I just picked up on it."

Morgan Toles is shown in action last summer playing for the Georgia Metros.

Toles is also a star point guard for her AAU team, the Georgia Metros. In June she was a standout performer with her Sandy Creek team at an Auburn basketball camp.

Toles is the fourth Auburn verbal commitment who plans to sign in the early period in November with the Tigers. Others include: 6-3 forward Blanche Alverson from Buford, Ga., High; 6-7 center Pascale "P.J." West and 5-10 guard Nicolle Thomas of Colquitt County High in Moultrie, Ga.
