Sullivan Named SEC Freshman of the Week
Birmingham, Ala.--Auburn's Frankie Sullivan has been named men's basketball SEC Freshman of the Week after helping the Tigers to a pair of victories over Arkansas and Mississippi State. The 6-1 guard averaged 10 points and three assists for the week. Coach Jeff Lebo says he is pleased with how Sullivan is progressing in all phases of the game. "He has made tremendous progress," the coach notes. "He is a competitive kid. He has got toughness. He fell on the floor in practice the day before (a game) on his back and on his head. Most kids would have been out for two weeks and he popped right up off the ground. He wasn't going to show any of his teammates he was hurt. He just popped right up, blew it off and never said anything about it." Lebo says he likes the way Sullivan gets a lot of "50-50" balls. "He is certainly not afraid," the coach says. "He's a winner. He has got some leadership characteristics you don't see freshmen have too often." Lebo adds, "Frankie plays with confidence. I don't have any problem putting him in any game situations for a freshman. He's been a big lift for our team--gives us depth in the backcourt. Typically this is a time of year where you'll see freshmen hit a wall a little bit, but he seems to be getting stronger at this point in the season." Frankie Sullivan's playing time has increased in recent games. For the season Sullivan is averaging 7.1 points, 2.0 rebounds and 1.3 steals per game. "It was one of my goals to be named SEC Freshman of the Week and also to be named SEC Freshman of the Year," Sullivan says. "I like the way our team is playing, and I like the way Coach is playing me. Our team is playing the way we have been practicing." Kentucky's Jodie Meeks was named SEC Player of the Week. Auburn returns to action with a 6:30 p.m. CST game at Georgia on Wednesday. The Tigers, who are 16-9 overall and 5-5 in the SEC, are on a three-game winning streak, but have just two home games in their final six regular season contests. "There is no doubt we have a tough row to hoe," Lebo says. "It is obviously very difficult on the road."
