Bonner, a first team All-American and the SEC Player of the Year as a senior, was the fifth overall pick in the WNBA Draft this spring. She is playing this season for the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury after leading Coach Nell Fortner's Tigers to the SEC Championship.
As a senior Bonner led the SEC in scoring at 21.1 points per game and set a single-season scoring record for an AU women's basketball player with 716 points.
"This is such a big honor and I am very excited about it," says Bonner. "There are so many great athletes in Alabama. I just have to thank my coaches, my family and my teammates for all the support during my time at Auburn."
The last Auburn athlete to win the award was football's Jason Campbell in 2004. Bonner is the first AU's women's basketball player to win the award.
"Auburn has had some great women's basketball players over the years so I am very honored to be the first chosen," Bonner says.
Bonner finished her career as Auburn's all-time leading scorer with 2,162 points. She finished second in career rebounds with 1,047.
