Sunday Night Auburn Practice Notes

Demond Washington catches a punt.

Auburn, Ala.--News and notes from Auburn's fifth preseason practice are featured.

*Wes Byrum looked sharp kicking field goals at Sunday's practice. He kicked the ball high and had plenty of leg. He wrapped up his portion of practice by drilling a 47-yarder with plenty of room to spare.

*Juco transfer Demond Washington is picking up things quickly and looks like he will be a major contributor at cornerback this season. He also is working as a punt returner.

*Some of the other possibilities at punt returner among the newcomers include receivers Anthony Gulley and Travante Stallworth.

*One of the faster players on the team, wide receiver Quindarius Carr, is another Tiger getting a look as a punt returner. Other returning players working on punt returns include wide receiver Montez Billings and cornerback Walt McFadden.

*We have discussed linebacker depth as being an issue, even if everybody is 100 percent. A pair of LBs, Spencer Pybus and Adam Herring, were held out of Sunday's practice.

*Freshman Robert Cooper said he doesn't have any problem with being moved from quarterback to tight end, but notes he is a work in progress. Playing QB and defensive back in high school at Daphne, he notes that he has a lot to learn at his new position. He notes that he has dropped weight this summer on campus and is currently 6-4, 218 pounds.
