Auburn, Ala.--Junior Demond Washington has been named the Southeastern Conference Special Teams Player of the Week for his performance vs. Georgia.
Washington set an Auburn record with 202 kickoff returns in his team’s 31-24 loss to the Bulldogs. His total included a 99-yard kickoff return that tied the game at 24-24 in the fourth quarter.
The first-year Tiger, who transferred to Auburn from Gulf Coast Community College this year, also had a 19-yard punt return, his team’s longest of the season. His kickoff return for a score was the sixth longest in AU history.
Washington, who is from Tallassee, Ala., added four tackles in his second career start at safety, a position he moved to earlier this month from cornerback to fill in for injured teammate Zac Etheridge.
Washington’s 40.4 yards kickoff return average on his five attempts is the second best in SEC history in a single game for a player with a minimum of four returns.
Auburn has its first off week of the season and will return to action on Friday, Nov. 27th vs. Alabama.
