Junior college defensive back Eric Russell talks about his interest in Auburn and his visit coming…
Versatile Russell Enjoys Auburn Visit
Cerritos, Cal.--One of the key positions for the Auburn Tigers in this recruiting class is in the secondary with Walter McFadden a senior and very little depth to finish out the 2009 season because of injuries. A player that could fit the bill for Coach Gene Chizik and his staff is junior college defensive back Eric Russell. Taking an official visit over Thanksgiving to take in the Iron Bowl and get a chance to see Auburn for the first time, the California native said the trip was exactly what he was looking for. "It went pretty well," Russell said. "I just wish the game could have gone a little differently. The coaches made me feel at home. I'm really looking forward to telling my parents about it. They've talked to Coach Troop (Trooper Taylor). He really wants to meet my mom. I guess I'm really looking forward to going there." The only question that remains for Russell is will he get an offer from the Tigers? An impressive player as a defensive back and also a kick returner for Cerritos College, Russell said the coaching staff indicated an offer was coming and that puts Auburn at the top of the list. "They do want to offer me," Russell said. "This would be my first big one. I have some D II schools and stuff. I'm going to trip to Washington to see how that goes. So far this would be my biggest offer. I'm really looking at coming at Auburn." A big plus in Auburn's favor was Russell's bonding with the fans on the campus for Friday's Iron Bowl game against Alabama. In addition to cheering for the current Auburn players during the Tiger Walk and the game, Russell said they did a good job of making him feel at home as well. "The fans are really interested in the football team," Russell said. "I'm walking around and people are calling my name. I don't even know who they are. I guess they're looking me up. They were asking me about punt returns and kickoff returns. The fans were really interested in me. That's a plus right now." Russell said the Auburn coaches are waiting to check out his transcripts from junior college before putting forth an official offer, but he believes it's coming soon. His goal is to be join the team at the semester break if the offer comes and he's working to make that happen.
