Smalley, Carrier Spark Auburn Past GW
Auburn, Ala.--Alli Smalley scored 19 points and Keke Carrier added 17 points as Auburn cruised to a 62-43 women's basketball victory over George Washington on Saturday. Smalley, normally the starter at two-guard, filled in at point guard for injured freshman Morgan Toles and the junior dished out six assists with just two turnovers. She also pulled down a game-high nine rebounds and made three steals. Carrier hit 7-9 field goals and added six rebounds for the Tigers, who improved their record to 6-3 and avenged a loss to George Washington last year. George Washington fell to 2-5. "I like how we came out and I thought that we attacked their zone defense very well," Coach Nell Fortner said. "KeKe was really unstoppable in there for a long time. I was also very pleased with how Alli Smalley ran the team today. She was outstanding. "Alli was outstanding," Fortner added. "She was just a warrior today. She played 39 minutes and she contributed on both ends of the floor. She had to score and her defense was also very good. She was tough today, but I expect that because she's a heck of a player." The Tigers also got 14 points from freshman Blanche Alverson, her collegiate high points game. Auburn took control early. The Colonials made just four first half field goals and trailed 31-14 at halftime. Smalley said that the Tigers are looking forward to getting Toles back after she has missed the past two games. "I think as a team we have to step up," she said. "We are shorthanded--we only have eight players. Everyone just had to step up today." Smalley said the Tigers played good defense in the first half to take charge. "In the first half we came out with a lot of energy and defensive aggression. I was pleased with that. We have to work on doing that for 40 minutes. We played both man and zone. The zone is what we started out in and that put the pressure on them and made them take bad shots." The Tigers are off for final exams next week and will return to action Dec. 15th at home vs. Liberty.
