Offers Coming in for Brentwood Standout
Brentwood, Tenn.--Cornerback Derek King is proving to be popular with college football coaches even though he isn't taking part in spring practices at Brentwood Academy this year. Concentrating on his role as a sprinter on the school's track and field team, King is working to become the fastest high school athlete in the state of Tennessee. "Football recruiting is going well," he tells Inside the Auburn Tigers. "In the past two weeks I have added three more offers from Duke, Memphis and Virginia." King says he is excited to be garnering a lot of recruiting attention from college coaches. "It really is a blessing," he says. "Ever since I was a little kid I have been interested in playing college football and it is exciting that it looks like I will have that opportunity." King notes that he is currently nursing a slighty pulled hamstring that should be healed for the regional meet next week. "I should be 100 percent by then," says the junior, who notes that his best time this spring is 10.68 seconds in the event. "My goal is to run a 10.5." Last year his best time was 10.71 in the 100 meters and he finished as the runnerup at the state meet as a sophomore. A triple threat prospect in football at cornerback and running back, he is also a kick returner. Last fall as a junior he rushed the football 76 times for 738 yards, an average of 9.7 yards per carry. He also caught seven passes for 66 yards. On defense he made 31 solo tackles with 14 assists and intercepted a pass. He also scored a touchdown on a kickoff return and averaged 27.0 yards per return last season. A 6-0, 180-pounder who says he will likely be a cornerback in college, his father, Derek King., Sr., played on the offensive line in the SEC at Ole Miss. His mother is also a graduate of Ole Miss, but King notes that he believes his parents will be supportive of his college choice wherever he goes. "I really like the SEC schools," he says, noting that Auburn is one of his favorites. "I have already been to Auburn and I want to bring my parents there for a visit." King attended two Auburn games last fall. "I also want to visit Ole Miss with my parents this summer," he says. "They haven't been back there since they graduated." Academically the high school junior notes he is doing well. "I have a 3.5 GPA," says King, who adds that he is interested in majoring in sports medicine.
