Auburn commitment Jonathan Rose talks about his decision and what went into choosing the Tigers…
Rose Selects Auburn, Likes AU "Family"
Leeds, Ala.--Jonathan Rose, who will be a senior at Leeds High School this season, announced on Sunday night that he will follow in his father's footsteps and play college football for the Auburn Tigers. The six-foot,two, 185-pound cornerback chose Coach Gene Chizik's Tigers over Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia, Florida State, Mississippi State and other colleges. Rose said the "family" atmosphere of the Auburn program was a major factor in his decision. He is the son of former Tiger safety Charles Rose, who lettered for the Tigers in 1992, 1994, 1995 and 1996. He is also related to former Tiger Courtney Rose, his father's cousin. Rose made his announcement live on television on Channel 42 in Birmingham. He placed six college hats on table and removed the Mississipi State, FSU and Georgia hats and then from his final three of Auburn, Tennessee and Alabama he chose the Auburn hat and announced he will play for the Tigers. Rose is Auburn's 14th verbal commitment for the 2011 signee class and the third player in the past week to select the Tigers. The rising senior says his relationship with the Auburn staff, particularly Phillip Lolley who handles safeties and Tommy Thigpen who coaches safeties, is a major factor in his decision. "I like the Auburn coaches," he notes. "I like the interaction with Coach Lolley and Coach Thig. I like Coach Trooper (wide receivers coach Trooper Taylor) down there and the running back coach (Curtis Luper)." Rose notes that Lolley will be his position coach in college and says that the coach likes his height, speed and ability to play the game. "He likes the physical build and that is what attracts him to certain cornerbacks," Rose adds. Rose also notes that Auburn was his early leader and he compared other schools to AU. Jonathan Rose is shown in a pass coverage drill at an Auburn football camp. A prospect who performed well at an Auburn one-day prospects camp this summer, Rose made 48 tackles as a junior and intercepted five passes. He scored four touchdowns playing on special teams. Rose notes that finding a place where there is good chemistry on the coaching staff and with the players was a priority during recruiting and he says that is one of the reasons he chose the Tigers. "Auburn has a family feeling," he says. "It's a down-home feeling to me when I go down there." Rose notes that he wanted to make his decision prior to the start of the season so his recruitment won't be a distraction to his team. "I just wanted to get it over with so I can focus on me and my teammates winning the state championship," he says. The prospect says he feels good about his decision. "I really like Auburn," he says.
