High school football has reached the second round of the Alabama State Playoffs this week. An important battle in 2A features the American Christian Patriots (9-2, 7-0) and the Highland Home Flying Squadron (9-2, 5-2).
American Christian is led by
Alabama
commitment and quarterback
Brad Smelley
. Smelley averages over 232 yards per game for Coach Stephen Hooks and the Patriots. His offense averages about 42 points per game and more than 300 yards.
They will be tough to stop for Coach Bob Farrior’s Flying Squadron. “I expect them to do what they have done all year long. They have a balanced offense, about 50/50. They are extremely well coached and very intelligent. I expect a tough game,” Farrior said Wednesday afternoon.
With a Squadron defense that allows 26 points per game, guys like
Leo McCoy, Rico Harris,
and
Kelan Grace
will have to step up.
Highland Home has a tough task on offense as well. The Patriots only give up 15 points per game.
When asked about some playmakers on his offense, Farrior said, “We have quite a few. We have pretty good depth at our skill positions.
Deymond Sankey
is a real good quarterback, and he has a good backup in
Rico Harris."
"We have two really good wide receivers,
Darius Chambers
and
Kelan Grace."
Those guys will have to step up for the Squadron and Farrior said penalties cannot lose the game.
“We have out-gained every opponent this year, but we have been hurt by penalties. We can’t let that happen," he said.
