For anyone who witnessed the game itself, Monday's SEC release merely confirmed the expected as…
SEC Bloggers Week Seven Review
BG is Billy Gomila, BH is Brian Harbach, GH is Gabe Harris , RM is Russ Mitchell, and BS is Barrett Sallee.
1. OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
BG: Mike Hartline; QB, Kentucky – Who would have thought this guy would start playing at an all-conference level? He won't win that designation with Ryan Mallet and Cam Newton around, but Hartline's on pace for a 3,000 yard season.
BH: Mike Hartline; QB, Kentucky – 4 TD passes, 3 in the 2H, and one classic reaction after the game winner to Randall Cobb.
GH: Mike Hartline; QB, Kentucky – This team looks like it will never give up, and it was personified by Hartline. What a great comeback and HUGE pass on the 4th down game winner.
RM: Cameron Newton; QB, Auburn – It might be getting boring and old for some, but if not for Newton AU likely loses another game. With him, they're in the National Championship hunt. 10/14 passing for 140 yards, 1 TD/0 INTs, while rushing for 188 yards on 25 carries, with 3 more TDs. Auburn's offense is amazing, and Newton IS the offense. Besides, the headline in the Kentucky game was Lattimore's injury with 12:50 to play in the 3Q, up 28-10; SC didn't score a point after that and couldn't run out the clock against Kentucky's poor rush defense.
BS: Mike Hartline; QB, Kentucky – 32/42 for 349 yards and 4 TDs, including the game-winner to Randall Cobb on 4th and 7.
2. DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
BG: Chris White; LB, MSU – Another out-of-nowhere guy who is playing at an all-league level.
BH: Chris White; LB, MSU – The stats are pretty nasty: 11 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks in the Swamp.
GH: Chris White; LB, MSU – 11 tackles (9 solo), 4.5 of them for -20 yards, 2 sacks for -16 yards, as the Bulldogs held Florida to their lowest point total in 5 years.
RM: Josh Bynes; LB, Auburn – INTs sealed the deal in an offensive showcase. Was pretty near the game's only defense, and that won it for Auburn.
BS: Josh Bynes; LB, Auburn – 2 huge INTs in the 4Q led to the final 2 TDs in Auburn's record-setting win over Arkansas.
3. SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
BG: Onterio McCalebb; KR, Auburn – He may not have gotten into the end zone, but McCalebb's 99-yard return came right in time to help Auburn take control.
BH: Antonio Goodwin; WR, Auburn – Blocked punt in the 1H against Arkansas was one of many great plays by Auburn special teams.
GH: Ryan Tydlacka; P, Kentucky – Could have been a 3-way Auburn tie between Byrum, McCalebb and Goodwin, but I'm going with Tydlacka in a game where field position actually mattered. Tydlacka's 6 punts put SC at their 19 yard line on average, including his last which put the Gamecocks at their 5 yard line.
RM: Ryan Tydlacka; P, Kentucky – We've written about it before, but this kid could very well be the Special Teams player of the year if this keeps up.
BS: Onterio McCalebb; KR, Auburn – 99-yard kickoff return down to the one-yard-line puts Auburn in position to score its 3rd TD. Just one of many uppercuts thrown in this offensive slugfest.
4. COACH OF THE WEEK
BG: Dan Mullen – So what are the chances that Jeremy Foley presented him with a big Halliburton briefcase full of cash in the Visitor's locker room to get him to take his old job back?
BH: Dan Mullen – Difference between Meyer and Mullen is that Mullen knows his team enough to plan how to win, while Meyer forces what he has to fit his system. Student embarrassed the teacher in the Swamp.
GH: Joker Phillips – UK's never-say-die attitude should be commended; 0-3 team coming off a heartbreaking loss could have folded the tent against SC, especially after trailing 28-10. But they didn't and pulled off a big upset. Reminiscent of the LSU upset in 2007.
RM: Dan Mullen – Has turned the corner at MSU. Remember, this team really should have beaten Auburn, or at least forced OT. Still has some tough games remaining, most notably @ Bama and Arkansas, but as expected, a program defining win last Saturday.
BS: Dan Mullen – Win over Florida propels the Bulldogs into SEC relevancy, and puts Mullen at the forefront of the SEC Coach of the Year debate.
5. BEST GAME OF THE WEEK Arkansas v. Auburn
BG: Arkansas v. Auburn – I know we all expected a shootout, but not a 100-plus point shootout in which Ryan Mallet only played about a quarter.
BH: Arkansas v. Auburn – Offense, controversy, injuries, Heisman candidates and a furious fourth. Great game.
GH: Arkansas v. Auburn – The wildest game I have ever witnessed set an SEC record for most points scored in a regulation game.
RM: Arkansas v. Auburn – Would go SC v. Kentucky, but once Lattimore left the game, it became a bit predictable. Whereas in Auburn, Tyler Wilson showed why many thought he was the better QB coming out of Spring practice in 2009. Classic game that had everything.
BS: Arkansas v. Auburn – Those two teams probably won't score that much when they play basketball this season. Seriously.
6. BIGGEST SURPRISE OF THE WEEK
BG: Florida – Again, I expected FL to struggle in this game. But 7 points? The Steve Addazio saga might be more interesting than anybody realizes come this offseason.
BH: 7 Points – Florida scored 7 points at home against MSU, their lowest point total in the Swamp under Meyer. Something's broken.
GH: 566 yards of total offense and 43 points on the road – Arkansas put up those numbers in Auburn and lost by 22 points. Think Hog fans are surprised at that?
RM: Tyler Wilson – Without Cam Newton, Auburn's average. Without Marcus Lattimore, SC's average. Without Ryan Mallett, Arkansas is a very dangerous football program. At least offensively. Few teams in American have the offensive fire power to keep up with Mr. Wilson – outside of Auburn, that is. Unfortunately for the Hogs.
BS: Mike Hartline – Have a day, Mike. Lit up South Carolina's secondary to the tune of 348 yards and 4 TDs.
7. BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT OF THE WEEK
BG: South Carolina – Seeing the South Carolina score was a punch in the gut. You know they were warned to be careful. And clearly, they did not listen.
BH: South Carolina – Even without Lattimore, someone had to step up with an 18 point lead. Yet no one did.
GH: ESPN Gameday – LSU @ Auburn in a battle of undefeated team, and ESPN chooses Oklahoma @ Missouri? I guess they need to promote that ABC night game heavily instead of a rival network's game. Not that that would ever have anything to do with it, Heavens to Betsy.
RM: Instant Replay in Alabama – Alabama is quickly becoming the Bermuda Triangle of Instant Replay officiating. From the Patrick Peterson no call last year to the Auburn game last Saturday, we're beginning to question whether it should be called "Instant Replay" or "Instant State of Alabama". Just saying, you're officially on notice. We'll see what happens this week when LSU rolls into the Yellowhammer State.
BS: Steve Spurrier's game management – Calling your last timeout for a shot at the road win makes sense, but then calling a fade route to a WR not named Alshon Jeffery? That's a bad job, Steve.
