Dye-Log: An Opportunity to Pull Together

Coach Pat Dye

College Football Hall of Fame coach Pat Dye writes about the Auburn Tigers in this edition of the Dye-Log.

I know that a lot of Auburn fans had a negative emotional reaction to the news over the weekend that starting center Reese Dismukes got in trouble and has been suspended from the team by Coach Gene Chizik.

Anyway you look at the situation with Dismukes being arrested for public intoxication in downtown Auburn a week before the season opener, it's not good. He is a talented, proven player. Hopefully, nothing like this happens again with him.

Although I probably shouldn't, I feel sorry for the young man. I feel really sorry for his teammates, his coaches, his momma and daddy and all of the Auburn fans he has disappointed.

When something like this happens it is time for strong leadership from the head coach and Gene Chizik has shown he can handle that part of his job. I think it is pretty well documented with past issues that Coach Chizik isn't going to put up with kids who get out of line and don't live up to the standards he expects from Auburn's football players off the field.

It is also a time for the players on the team to close ranks and keep on marching. I am sure that is what will happen.

It is a good thing for the Tigers that the team has a solid citizen like Tunde Fariyike to step in and take over as the new starting center for what should be a very challenging opening game against Clemson on Saturday night in Atlanta. There is an old saying that when one door closes, another one opens. The door is open for Tunde and he now has the opportunity to show what he can do.

It is the American way to rally and pull closer together to deal with adversity. Maybe what happened with the suspension will be a catalyst that brings the team closer together. Hopefully, that's what happens.
