He originally thought it would be fall 2013, then he mentioned July 1 as a possibility, but it happened Sunday because he knew he was ready.
"I was going to commit on July 1, the same time as my teammate Wesley Green, but there was no point on me waiting to commit to South Carolina," Key said. "Wesley is going to The Opening to commit, but I am not going to be there, so I said, why wait, so I committed today."
Key has known for weeks that Carolina was clearly his leader. He connected with the coaches and the visit Friday made everything so clear to him.
"Just the whole vibe there is right for me. I am very close to the coaches, I am good friends with some of their commitments (Dexter Neal and Bryson Allen-Williams are two), and I like the academics there too. It is the right place for me."
Plenty of other schools have been recruiting the 6-foot-5, 210 pound junior defensive end out of Lithonia (Ga.) M.L.K. for the past 12 months, but Key seems set on the Gamecocks.
"I am 100-percent committed to Carolina," said one of the top 2015 prospects in the Peach State. "I am still going to take other visits, but I know where I am going."
