Auburn Rewards Malzahn & Staff; Pearl Signs
Auburn, Ala.--It was a big year for Auburn football coach Gus Malzahn and his assistants as they received raises and contract extensions following their run to the BCS Championship Game soon after the 2014 season. In addition new basketball coach Bruce Pearl signed a six-year contract that included a $500,000 signing bonus, Auburn announced on Friday. Malzahn's contract was extended for two years through the 2019 season and is worth a total of $3.85 million this season with an increase of $250,000 annually through 2019. The new contract includes incentives such as playing in the national championship game ($300,000), winning the national title ($500,000) and playing in one of the top six bowl games ($200,000). Malzahn will also receive $140,000 annually over the next five years to offset his buyout to Arkansas State. Should Auburn elect to terminate Malzahn without cause the buyout would be $2,237,500 for each year remaining on his contract. Coming back off his show-cause order by the NCAA, Pearl signed a contract that is worth $2.2 million this year with built-in raises of at least $100,000 per year through the 2020 season. The incentives in the contract could be worth as much as $600,00 if the Tigers were to win a national championship under the coach. Bruce Pearl Some of the other incentives include $100,000 for an SEC regular-season championship, $50,000 for making the NCAA Tournament and $200,000 for the national title. He would also receive bonuses of $25,000 each of the next two seasons for winning at least 20 games and nine SEC games. There is also an attendance bonus built into Pearl's contract, paying him $50,000 if more half of Auburn's games are sold out. Rodney Garner Auburn defensive line coach Rodney Garner also got a raise, increasing his annual salary to $550,000 for a contract that runs through June 30, 2017. Garner will also receive an additional $50,000 for each year he's employed on Feb. 15. Those will be paid out in a lump sum at the end of his contract. The rest of Auburn's football assistant salaries and raises for the 2014 season: *Defensive Coordinator Ellis Johson--Increased $50,000 from $800,000 to $850,000. Contract extended until June 30, 2017 Rhett Lashlee *Offensive Coordinator Rhett Lashlee--Increased $250,000 from $350,000 to $600,000. Contract extended until June 30, 2017 *Co-Offensive Coordinator Dameyune Craig--Increased $150,000 from $350,000 to $500,000. Contract extended until June 30, 2017 *Co-Defensive Coordinator Charlie Harbison--Increased $50,000 from $425,000 to $475,000. Contract extended until June 30, 2017 *Offensive Line Coach J.B. Grimes--Increased $100,000 from $270,000 to $370,000. Contract extended until June 30, 2016 *Tight Ends Coach Scott Fountain--Increased $75,000 from $250,000 to $325,000. Contract extended until June 30, 2016 *Running Backs Coach Tim Horton--Increased $75,000 from $250,000 to $325,000. Contract extended until June 30, 2016 *Defensive Backs Coach Melvin Smith--Increased $25,000 from $300,000 to $325,000.
